Name: Equine Self Carriage With Deb Davies
    Date: September 16, 2017 - September 17, 2017
    Event Description:

Exploring self-carriage – what is it really?

This word is not foreign to any competitor or rider, yet it is often somewhat misunderstood in terms of how it is actually created.  Balance, fluidity, thoroughness, harmony, impulsion, straightness are all terms, which define what we are looking for, but the how to accomplish it beyond the format of training is often overlooked.

During this lecture we will be looking at the complex cycle of muscle, ligaments, tendons and structure that are behind the cycle of movement that ultimately can express as self -carriage.

Within this web valuable concepts beyond the importance of training mechanics will be dissected including:
    • Physical attributes of muscle firing relative to fluidity of the spine and  longitudinal flexion and extension in movement
    •  Form and function of the neck, back and hind-quarters relative to weight bearing posture
    • Structural components of the cycle of movement which create self carriage
    • Training versus correct posture in motion-there should be no difference between the two

Forward relaxation, straightness, balance and transitions, suppleness and tempo are all qualities we train to improve upon. During the lecture on Saturday and riding portion of the Sunday clinic, the structure, flow and firing that generate each of these training components, which contribute to self carriage, will be analyzed to support a deeper awareness of alignment between training methodology and self carriage, both static and in locomotion.

    FORMAT FOR SATURDAY LECTURE
Power point presentation and handouts to support the topic above
Joints and skull of equine skeleton will be used to facilitate learning
Ground work with a painted horse to identify muscles and correct function

    FORMAT FOR SUNDAY CLINIC
Developing the eye and feel for self carriage components in your own horse

Each horse will be evaluated under saddle and the lesson will be guided by addressing compensation patterns that may be inhibiting the horses potential for self carriage, as well as training difficulties the rider is experiencing.
8:30am – short evaluation of several horses both static and in motion to demonstrate topics discussed yesterday.  Hand-outs will be available to those who did not attend the lecture for a small printing fee.

10:30 – 12:30 The importance of our bodies in self carriage relative to the horses self carriage.  Under saddle – 2 groups one hour each

1:30 – 5:30 – Semi private lessons  demonstrating concepts relative to the lecture and individualized for each horse/riders needs.
